A walk up School Knott
Unless you live very near to the hotel, the chances are that you cannot see the Lake District from your window. So to bring a little more of the region into your sitting room, (or wherever you use your computer) we have a little cinematic treat for you. Jonathan Craig guides, who publish the Walks around Windermere book that you get at reception have recently completed a short video of a walk up School Knott. This is no 3 day production, with a big crew and lots of camera trickery. It was just the walk checkers taking video shots as they went round and then editing them into a short film.
School Knott is a very popular local walk, and offers a range of scenery, from a peaceful mountain tarn to superb views of Windermere Town and the lake beyond. The views rival those of Orrest Head, in fact, some people say that they are better as you get a 360 degree panorama - from the Coniston Fells in the West to Ingleborough in Yorkshire to the East. It is a short walk and can easily be undertaken in an afternoon, and the climbing is described as gentle at best, although you still need a reasonable level of fitness to complete it. The ground underfoot is a mixture of rocky track, pasture, and the occasional shallow stream to cross.
Anyway, that's enough of me telling you all about it. Why not take a look for yourselves. Note that the route shown on the video is slightly different to the route from the front door of Thornbank, but there is no need to worry, the Thornbank walking book has full, easy to follow instructions, and if anything, the walk is slightly easier than that shown on the video. So enjoy it here, and then come to see us and enjoy it in real life.
